Waste Watchers Benefice Holiday Club 2011
What a load of rubbish!
How do you get a pig to hospital? In a hambulance.
This was just one of the terrible jokes extracted from the ‘Bottle Bank’ during four days of Waste Watchers Holiday Club, organised by the
benefice churches at the end of August. Just over fifty children aged 5 to 11 enjoyed fun, crafts, games, video stories and songs, not to
mention the efforts of some highly incompetent binwomen and binmen. Shere Village Hall was full of rubbish at the beginning, but by the end,
and despite the binpeople, it really looked rather nice! The central theme was transformation – how despite our mistakes and failures as people and as
carers for a good world, God’s plan through Jesus is to help and rescue us.
A team of Leaders and younger helpers put in a huge amount of effort, and day by day a refreshment team ensured that parents dropping
children had the chance of coffee and wonderful array of donated cake – shame that the weather mostly prevented refreshment on the Village Hall lawn.
A further team provided an excellent barbecue on Friday evening at our other venue, Shere School and this time the weather was kind.
On Sunday morning Shere and Albury churches moved out to Holiday Club for a special service in Shere Village Hall. A final taste of Waste Watchers, a
chance for parents and congregations to see at first hand a little of what had been going on, and the last serving of coffee and cake!
Huge thanks to everyone who helped in any way, to Shere School for letting us use their premises, and to Shere Village Hall and contractors for
getting the redecoration done in time! Lots of people said they wanted to come next year – there will be another Holiday Club over either four or five
days between 20th and 24th August 2012. Do put it in the diary.
